The challenge

Conveying a design vision to another. Working with a diverse set of designers (fiction and non- fiction alike) and illustrators. There is the tension of what people think of the Harvard Business Review brand—once stodgy and academic, now on the smart edge. I search for unexpected designers and illustrators to emerge from that stodge and create compelling and unexpected visuals.

The method

Explain, hunt, and allow space for that creative individual to demonstrate their talent. I translate my art direction to that designer or illustrator, as well as to internal and external stakeholders. It’s creative leadership, it’s clear direction, it’s selling, and it’s all in a day’s work.

The result

A stable of designers and illustrators from the world at large who contribute to a unique, trusted, and smart brand. I maintain strong relationships with all of them and can call on them anytime as projects require. I’m told they like working with me.
